Mårup Church, Church ruin near Lønstrup, Denmark
Mårup Church was a red brick structure standing on the edge of Lønstrup Klint, overlooking the North Sea. The building contained a nave and choir, positioned on the rocky coastal ridge above the shoreline.
The church was built around 1250 and served its community for more than 600 years before closing in 1926. A new house of worship was then constructed in the nearby village of Lønstrup, leaving the old building on the cliff behind.
For centuries, this site served as a landmark for fishermen and sailors returning from the North Sea. The place still connects visitors to that maritime heritage and the lives of people who worked these waters.
The site is easily accessible from the coastal road and offers free access to the ruins and memorial area. Visitors should be aware that the cliff is actively eroding, so staying back from the edges and moving carefully is important for safety.
The site holds a memorial for HMS Crescent, a British frigate that sank offshore in 1808. About 200 sailors from the ship found their final resting place on this ground.
