Virgen de Castrotierra

Virgen de Castrotierra, Religious title of Virgin Mary in Castrotierra de la Valduerna, Spain

The Virgen de Castrotierra is a religious title of the Virgin Mary venerated through an image normally kept at Astorga Cathedral. This sanctuary is the center of a pilgrimage that draws communities from the surrounding regions of Maragatería, Valduerna, and Cepeda.

The first recorded pilgrimage to Astorga Cathedral is documented in the Cathedral Chapter Archives as taking place in 1557. This religious tradition has since become an established practice that remains central to the spiritual life of the region.

The procession brings together several communities who carry their traditional banners to show their local identity and shared heritage. These banners are central symbols for each participating town and are displayed with pride during the gathering.

The pilgrimage takes place every seven years but can occur during periods of drought if local communities request it. Visitors should know that the sacred image remains at Astorga Cathedral during this time and the surrounding areas offer places to stop along the journey.

The procession brings together different towns whose members stay together in Astorga for nine days once they arrive to venerate the sanctuary. This extended period allows visitors to witness the connection between the various communities as they gather in shared devotion.
