Stærekassen, Art Nouveau theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark
Stærekassen is a theatre building in Art Nouveau style that was designed to serve as an additional stage for the Royal Danish Theatre. The facade features bronze reliefs showing Apollo and the Muses alongside portraits of Mozart and Shakespeare.
The building opened in 1931 as an additional stage for the Royal Danish Theatre. It also served as the original home of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation before the organization expanded elsewhere.
A large mosaic in the arched passageway displays artistic and scientific figures and was made from three million glass pieces sourced from Venice. This elaborate decoration shapes the impression of anyone walking through the passage.
The auditorium contains 775 numbered seats arranged for viewing performances. The foyer includes spaces designed to host receptions and events that complement the theatrical programs.
The name translates to 'The Starling Box' and comes from the original design, which included a prominent round window in the building. This architectural feature gave the theatre its memorable name.
