Mereworth Castle, Palladian country house in Mereworth, England
Mereworth Castle is a symmetrical country mansion in Kent with a central dome and four identical columned porches radiating from each side of the building. The structure follows strict geometric proportions and was entirely decorated with craftwork by Italian masters.
Architect Colen Campbell designed this house between 1720 and 1725 for John Fane, who later became 7th Earl of Westmorland. The building was conceived as a reinterpretation of a celebrated Italian villa, establishing new standards for classical architecture in northern Europe.
The interiors showcase work by Italian craftsmen brought to England for this project, with ornate plasterwork and painted walls that reflect the tastes of early Georgian nobility.
The house sits on private grounds near Tonbridge Road A26 and can be viewed from the exterior at certain vantage points. Visitors should check in advance whether interior tours are available, as access to the inside is limited and subject to specific conditions.
The building stands as one of only five British houses directly modeled after Palladio's Villa Rotonda, featuring a circular domed hall. This room embodies the Italian architect's idea of creating a central gathering space with complete natural light from above.
