Hartwell House, Country house hotel in Buckinghamshire, England
Hartwell House is a Grade I listed country house set within about 90 acres of landscaped grounds, combining Jacobean and Georgian architectural styles. The main building and Hartwell Court provide accommodation across 48 individually designed rooms and suites, with additional lodging in The Old Rectory.
Louis XVIII, the exiled French king, lived here with his court from 1809 to 1814 during the Napoleonic Wars. This period gave the house significant historical standing and transformed it into a center for exiled French royalty.
The rooms display antique furnishings and paintings that show different periods of English decorative arts. Walking through the spaces reveals how design tastes changed across the centuries.
The grounds are easy to navigate, with staff available to help guests find their way around and learn about the gardens and buildings. The property spreads across multiple structures, so it helps to know the layout when checking in and planning your stay.
The property features a converted 18th-century indoor riding school that now serves as part of the hotel accommodations near the spa facilities. This unexpected repurposing shows how historic structures can be creatively adapted for contemporary use.
