Art collections of Holkham Hall

The art collection at Holkham Hall features paintings by European masters such as Rubens, Van Dyck, and Gainsborough along with ancient Roman marble sculptures and classical busts. The works are distributed throughout the formal State Rooms of the house, forming a comprehensive ensemble of painting and sculpture.

The collection was formed when Thomas Coke, the first Earl of Leicester, traveled through Italy between 1712 and 1718 and acquired artworks systematically. This journey shaped not only the collection but also the architectural concept of the entire estate.

The sculptures and furnishings in the State Rooms reveal the artistic preferences the Coke family developed over generations. Visitors see how European tapestries and ancient objects work together to shape the rooms and reflect the tastes of their time.

The collection is accessible from March through October and can be viewed with guided tours. Visitors should allow several hours to explore all the rooms and works at a leisurely pace.

The estate features a distinctive architectural design where multiple doors are arranged so that direct sightlines extend from the Long Library through several open doorways to the Chapel. This creates a spatial connection that reflects the original planning of the house.
