Caldey Abbey

Caldey Abbey is a limestone monastery built on an island off the Welsh coast between 1906 and 1910. The building features Arts and Crafts design elements and is topped by a striking bell tower.

Early Christian monks first settled on the island in the 6th century and established a religious community. The current monastery was founded by Irish Trappists who developed it according to their monastic traditions.

The monks living there follow a strict daily routine centered on prayer and contemplation. They also make perfume, chocolate, and shortbread that they sell to visitors and online.

The monastery is only accessible by boat from Tenby harbor, with services running mainly during warmer months. It is wise to plan enough time before the last return departure in the afternoon.
