Moot Hall, Municipal building and tourism office in Boroughgate, Appleby-in-Westmorland, England
The Moot Hall is a rectangular municipal building and tourism office at Boroughgate in Appleby-in-Westmorland with a stucco exterior, six bays on each side, an external staircase, and a bellcote on the roof. The ground floor contains the Tourist Information Centre, while the first floor holds the council chamber and mayor's parlour for town council meetings.
The building was completed in 1596 and served as the venue for county assize hearings from 1670 until 1778, when these proceedings moved to Shire Hall. This role made it a significant site in the region's legal history for over a century.
The building houses a portrait attributed to Godfried Schalcken and a painting of William Lowther, First Earl of Lonsdale, which offer visitors insight into the town's artistic history. These works reveal connections to regional nobility and artistic life from past centuries.
The Tourist Information Centre on the ground floor provides visitors with information and guidance for exploring the town and surrounding area. Wheelchair access is available, and its location on Boroughgate makes it easy to find and reach.
A comprehensive restoration in 2022 replaced modern cement with traditional hot-mixed lime render to allow the historic structure to regulate moisture properly. This careful reconstruction uses techniques similar to the original construction, preserving the building's longevity for future generations.
