Monzie Castle, Tower house and country mansion in Perth and Kinross, Scotland.
Monzie Castle is a tower house and country house near Crieff in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. It combines an older L-shaped stone tower with a later castellated mansion, giving the building an irregular roofline and a mix of architectural styles visible from outside.
The original tower was built in 1634 by the Graeme family, who had come to own the land through inheritance. Late in the 18th century, a larger castellated house was added alongside it, turning the old stronghold into a more comfortable country residence.
Monzie Castle remains a private home today, which gives it a lived-in quality that many historic houses have lost. The surrounding grounds reflect the kind of rural Perthshire setting where land and estate life have always been closely connected.
The property sits in a rural part of Perthshire and is easiest to reach by car from the town of Crieff. As it is a private residence, public access is generally not available, so checking before any visit is strongly advised.
A fire in the early 20th century gutted much of the interior, and the rebuilding that followed completely changed how the inside of the house was arranged. What a visitor would see inside today largely reflects the work done after that fire, not the original 17th-century layout.
