Marquess of Anglesey's Column
Marquess of Anglesey's Column, Memorial column in Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Wales.
Marquess of Anglesey's Column is a grey marble structure rising about 30 meters high with Greek Revival details throughout its design. A bronze statue of a military figure in uniform stands at its summit, overlooking the surrounding landscape.
The column was built in 1816 to mark an important moment in military history. It stands as a reminder of a major historical figure who came from this region.
Local residents funded this monument to honor their most celebrated countryman. The column stands as a symbol of regional pride and connection to an important military figure from the area.
You can enter and climb an internal spiral staircase to reach a viewing platform at the top. From there you will see across the landscape to the water and surrounding areas.
The bronze statue was installed in 1860 using an innovative method that required no scaffolding. A local engineer designed this unusual approach specifically for lifting the heavy figure to the top.
