Pettigrew & Stephens, Department store in Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, United Kingdom.
Pettigrew & Stephens was a department store on Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow with a striking white stone facade and gilded dome roof. Inside, the building featured a spacious central light well covered with glass, surrounded by galleries that connected all the shopping floors.
The business was founded in 1888 by Andrew Pettigrew and William Stephens, initially operating as Manchester House before becoming a major Scottish retail destination. The current structure was rebuilt in 1901 following design principles that shaped the store's distinctive appearance and function.
The 1901 building reconstruction incorporated architectural elements from Charles Rennie Mackintosh, including the distinctive gilded dome design.
The store was located on a main shopping street in Glasgow city center and was easy to reach on foot. Visitors should know that the original building was demolished in 1971, leaving only historical memories of its spacious interior layout.
The decorative lantern from the gilded dome was rescued during demolition in 1971 and preserved by the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society. This single artifact serves as a reminder of the craftsmanship and architectural importance that once defined the building.
