Higher Barracks, Military residential complex in Exeter, England
Higher Barracks is a former military facility in Exeter featuring Georgian architectural design centered around a quadrangle and parade ground on Howell Road. The 1998 conversion into residential housing maintained the original structure while adding modern living spaces within the officers' quarters.
Built in 1794 during the French Revolution, the barracks provided accommodation for military personnel. During World War II, the United States based its 500th Medical Collecting Company there while preparing for operations in Normandy.
The location served as a center for military ceremonies where regimental bands performed concerts for the community. These gatherings left a lasting impression on how local people remember the site's role in their town.
The Grade II listed building is now divided into residential units and can be viewed from outside to appreciate the Georgian architecture. The central courtyard and historic structures are best explored on foot, preferably during daylight hours to see all the architectural details.
The site hosted American medical personnel preparing directly for European operations during the war. This little-known connection to American military history makes it a quiet reminder of transatlantic collaboration.
