Statue of Queen Victoria, Grade II listed statue at Town Hall Square, Reading, England
The Statue of Queen Victoria is a marble monument standing at Town Hall Square in Reading, depicting the monarch in an upright stance. The figure was carved from Carrara marble and occupies a prominent position beside the Town Hall.
The monument was unveiled in 1887 and commemorates Queen Victoria's 50-year reign jubilee. The dedication ceremony was a major event attended by royal guests.
Local sculptor George Blackall Simonds, who also created the Maiwand Lion in Forbury Gardens, carved this statue from Carrara marble.
The monument sits on a public square next to Town Hall and is easily accessible from Blagrave Street. The site has been recently cleaned and is in good condition.
The artwork was created by George Blackall Simonds, the same sculptor who designed the Maiwand Lion memorial nearby. This local artist produced several important works throughout Reading.
