Tomen y Rhodwydd, Motte-and-bailey castle in Llandegla, Wales.

Tomen y Rhodwydd is a motte-and-bailey castle in Llandegla, Wales, featuring a raised mound surrounded by defensive ditches and an outer enclosure. The fortification sits on elevated ground with clear views across the surrounding landscape.

The castle was built in 1149 by Owain Gwynedd, a leading Welsh prince of the time. It fell to rival forces from Powys in 1157 when enemies burned it down after taking control.

The fortress reflects the military needs of Welsh princes competing for control of the region in the 12th century. Its location and design still show why leaders of that time valued this spot for defending their territory.

The site is reachable from the A525 road and has parking available nearby. The remains are open and clear of obstruction, making it easy to walk around and explore the castle mounds and ditches.

The fortress guarded the eastern approach to Nant y Garth Pass, a crucial mountain route between rival principalities. Its crescent-shaped outer enclosure with a wavy defensive bank represents an unusual design for fortifications of this kind.
