The city stands at the meeting point of the Rivers Ouse and Foss, surrounded by preserved medieval walls stretching 2.5 miles in circumference.

Founded as Eboracum by Romans in 71 CE, the settlement transformed into a Viking capital named Jorvik before evolving into a major medieval trading center.
