Whittington Tump, Medieval mound in Whittington, England
The oval-shaped earthwork rises 20 meters above the valley floor, measuring 75 meters by 40 meters with artificially steepened northern slopes.
Archaeological evidence indicates a Romano-British settlement near the mound in the 2nd century AD, followed by an Anglo-Saxon enclosure in the 7th century.
The discovery of a neolithic scraper in 1886 reveals early human presence at this location, suggesting its role in prehistoric activities.
The mound stands as a visible landmark for travelers on the M5 motorway, marked by a single tree at its summit and a triangulation pillar.
Records from 1314 document Crookbarrow Manor at the base of the mound, with remnants of a medieval moat still visible in the surrounding area.
