Jubilee Pool, Art Deco seawater lido and Grade II listed building in Penzance, Cornwall.
Jubilee Pool stretches 300 feet in length and 160 feet in width, creating the largest outdoor seawater pool in the United Kingdom with a capacity of five million liters that can accommodate around 600 swimmers simultaneously.
Constructed between 1931 and 1935 under the supervision of Captain Frank Latham, the pool officially opened on May 31, 1935, coinciding with King George V's Silver Jubilee celebrations and attracting nearly 60,000 visitors by August of that year.
The pool exemplifies Art Deco architecture with geometric detailing and streamlined design allegedly inspired by the shape of a flying seagull, representing one of the most enduring examples of this architectural style in the United Kingdom.
Following severe storm damage in 2014, the facility underwent extensive restoration and reopened in 2016, now operating as a community-owned social enterprise with geothermal heating that allows year-round swimming in designated heated areas reaching 35°C.
Jubilee Pool stands as the only lido in the United Kingdom powered by geothermal energy, utilizing a 410-meter-deep geothermal well that provides sustainable heating while maintaining its function as one of only five remaining seawater lidos in the country.
