Co-Coperative Emporium And Danum House, Grade II listed building in Doncaster, England
The Co-Operative Emporium and Danum House is a building with a five-storey central block of brick cladding, while the three-storey side wings feature shiny Vitrolite tiles. A glazed staircase tower at the center connects the different levels of the complex.
Construction of the Co-Operative Emporium took place between 1938 and 1940 under local architect Henry Arthur Johnson for the Doncaster Co-operative Society. The project shaped the city landscape of that era and soon became a central hub for commerce and later entertainment.
The ballroom on the third floor once hosted live music performances before later serving as a nightclub. These spaces reflect a time when the building was a major entertainment destination for the city.
The upper floors were renovated in 2019 and converted into 78 residential apartments that feature a rooftop cinema. Visitors should note that access to certain areas may be restricted, as it is a residential building with protected heritage status.
Famous racing driver James Hunt was arrested at the former nightclub inside the building following an incident with a security staff member. This episode shows how the building was once a lively venue where unexpected and sometimes turbulent events took place.
