Swineshead Wood, Protected woodland in Swineshead, Bedfordshire, England
Swineshead Wood is a protected woodland in Bedfordshire covering about 22 hectares with distinct wet woodland sections. Pedunculate oak and ash trees grow alongside bluebells and dog's mercury on clay soil throughout different parts.
The woodland was designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1985. This protection recognized the importance of its plant communities and natural forest composition.
The woodland is managed by the Woodland Trust to preserve natural habitats for wildlife. You can see how different sections are kept in balance to support the forest's diverse plant and animal life.
You can enter the woodland from Sandye Lane on the southern edge, where marked trails guide you through different sections. These paths make it easy to explore both the wet and drier areas of the forest.
The forest contains specific combinations of oak species and ground plants that create distinct patterns throughout the seasons. In spring, the bluebell blooms create a striking blue carpet across sections of the woodland floor.
