Church of St Mary, Grade II listed church in Nelson, England
Description
Church of St Mary is a Grade II listed building located on Manchester Road, constructed from ashlar stone with slate roofing and featuring a nave, side aisles, chancel, and west tower. The structure includes a distinctive three-stage tower topped by an octagonal spire, with an east window showing four lights decorated with quatrefoil patterns.
History
Construction of the building was completed in 1879 as a center for Anglican worship in the growing industrial town. The architectural partnership Waddington & Dunkerley expanded the structure between 1905 and 1908, adding the west bay and tower that define its current appearance.
Culture
The church reflects the Anglican architectural traditions that shaped northern England during the industrial era. Its layout with side aisles and chancel shows how congregations were organized spatially within a community place of worship.
Practical
Access to the churchyard is restricted by security fencing, so visitors should check locally for any viewing opportunities before making a trip. The exterior architecture can be observed from the street, though the building is currently not in use for regular services.
Did you know?
The building underwent major structural repairs funded by the Heritage Trust for the North West after years of vacancy. This restoration effort highlights how local heritage organizations work to save forgotten buildings from dereliction.

I first visited St Mary's Church completely by accident over 20 years ago whilst driving past. I was struck by how beautiful it was and that it was boarded up. Nowadays in my spare time I'm a drone pilot and always looking for locations and remembered this place. The building is still majestic but has been allowed to decline even more so. I thoroughly explored the exterior today taking pictures then flew my drone to get other shots. It's sad to see the decline when you realise Nelson was once a roaring mill town, built on cotton, industry and purpose. When the mills died, so did the work — and what’s left feels hollowed out. Shops closed, pride faded, a town left to drift through decades of economic and social upheaval without a clear direction.
