Lake Lavarone, lake in Lavarone, Italy
Lake Lavarone is a small alpine lake situated on a high plateau in the Trentino region of Italy. The water covers around 64,000 square meters and reaches depths of up to 17 meters, surrounded by coniferous forests and meadows.
The lake formed over 2,000 years ago when a karst depression filled with water from nearby springs. In 1972, ancient tree trunks were discovered on the lake bed dating back roughly 2,200 years, providing evidence of its long existence.
The lake was historically a retreat for wealthy visitors from Central Europe seeking peace and natural surroundings. Today this heritage remains visible in how people walk along the shores and spend time in quiet reflection.
The lake is accessible year-round, with swimming facilities mainly open from June to September, offering chair and umbrella rentals plus boat rentals during this period. In winter, the frozen lake becomes suitable for ice skating when conditions permit.
The renowned psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud regularly visited the lakeshore during his stays in the region, finding solace and inspiration in its quiet surroundings. A walking trail called the Freud Path connects the town to the lake and traces routes he once walked.
