Equestrian statue of Redvers Buller, Bronze military monument at Hele Road junction in Exeter, England.
The equestrian statue depicts General Sir Redvers Buller mounted on his horse Biffen, cast in bronze and set upon a substantial stone base. It stands at the junction of New North Road and Hele Road near St David's Church.
Sculptor Adrian Jones created this memorial in 1905 to honor a general who earned the Victoria Cross for his actions during the Anglo-Zulu War. The work marks a specific phase of British military history.
The inscriptions on the monument list campaign locations across India, China, Canada, Ashanti, Egypt, Sudan, and South Africa. They reflect how a particular era of military service was publicly recognized and commemorated in the city.
The monument sits at a main road junction between St David's Church and Bury Meadow Park, making it easy to spot when walking through the area. You can view it freely at any time, as it stands in an open public space.
The sculpture was originally oriented to face away from Crediton, the general's birthplace, which provoked anger among residents at the time. This deliberate positioning became a point of local controversy when the monument was first installed.
