Town Hall, Ancillary Buildings And Former Police Station To Rear, Grade II listed town hall in Gateshead, England

This is a Grade II listed town hall on West Street featuring a symmetrical main facade with seven bays and three stained glass windows. The civic complex also includes ancillary buildings and a former police station positioned at the rear of the main structure.

Construction started in 1868 but faced significant challenges when groundwork struck a coal seam, causing nearby buildings to collapse. An ornamental clock was installed in 1892 and has remained a defining feature of the complex since then.

The building displays Italianate architectural details with a symmetrical design and ornamental clock tower that marks the town's character. The stained glass windows and decorative elements reflect the importance the community once placed on this civic institution.

The building is centrally located in Gateshead and easily accessible on foot, with its main entrance clearly marked on West Street. The venue was updated in 2009 and now offers comfortable conditions for visitors, though it is worth checking ahead to see which areas are open.

Over its history, the building served multiple purposes including housing a microelectronics research institute. Today it is being transformed to become a museum dedicated to unnatural history.
