The municipal complex stands on West Street with a symmetrical main facade containing seven bays and three stained glass windows.
Construction of the town hall began in 1868 and faced delays when preparatory work penetrated a coal seam, causing adjacent buildings to collapse.
The building incorporates an Italianate architectural style designed by John Johnstone and features an ornamental clock installed in 1892.
The performance hall underwent renovations in 2009 and now functions as a venue for various events and gatherings in Gateshead.
After serving multiple purposes, including housing a microelectronics institute, the structure will transform into a museum focusing on unnatural history.
