Hayashibara Museum of Art

Hayashibara Museum of Art, Art museum in Marunouchi, Japan.

The Hayashibara Museum of Art showcases Japanese traditional artworks, including ceramics, paintings, and cultural objects displayed within a modernist building featuring distinctive oversized bricks. The interior spaces are organized to provide a comprehensive view of different art forms and periods.

The museum opened in 1964 under the vision of architect Kunio Maekawa, who wove together Japanese and contemporary design principles in the building's structure. This founding period established a space where traditional art treasures could be shared with the public.

The collection brings together pieces from the former feudal lords of Okayama, the Ikeda family, alongside traditional artworks assembled by businessman Ichiro Hayashibara. These objects tell the story of the region's artistic heritage and the tastes of those who gathered them.

The museum sits about 20 minutes from Okayama Station and welcomes visitors from Tuesday through Sunday. When planning a visit, check the opening hours in advance and note that it closes on Mondays.

The exterior walls feature irregular oversized bricks that harmonize with the surrounding green spaces of the Marunouchi district. This unusual design choice shapes how the building appears within its landscape.
