St Begh's Church, Whitehaven

St Begh's Church is a Roman Catholic church in Whitehaven built with white sandstone walls and red sandstone trim. The interior is supported by octagonal columns carrying elegant arches, with an open timber roof creating the overhead structure.

French Benedictine monks established a Catholic mission here in 1706, but the building standing today was constructed between 1865 and 1868. It marked the return of Catholic worship to the town after centuries of absence.

The interior displays hand-carved details around the altar and stained glass windows showing religious scenes. Visitors can see how the craftwork and depictions of saints shape the space.

The church sits in a quiet neighborhood of Whitehaven and is easy to reach on foot. Access is straightforward from street level, and the interior has enough space to walk around and view the architecture at a comfortable pace.
