Hitchin Town Hall, Grade II listed town hall and movie theater in Hitchin, England.
Hitchin Town Hall is a Neo-Georgian red brick building on Brand Street with a symmetrical seven-bay facade, stone dressings, and a central arched doorway displaying the town's coat of arms. The building contains several event spaces including Mountford Hall, Lucas Room, and Terrace Gallery, each equipped with audio-visual facilities and catering services.
The building was constructed between 1900 and 1901 by architects Edward Mountford and Thomas Lucas, replacing an earlier Italianate structure from 1840 that had become inadequate for the town's growing population. This new construction reflected Hitchin's prosperity and expansion at the turn of the 20th century.
The venue hosts theater productions, concerts, and community celebrations that define the town's cultural life. Visitors experience the range of local artistic activity and gatherings in a space that brings tradition and contemporary performance together.
Visitors should know the building is accessible as both a public event venue and a museum with separate areas to explore. The best way to experience the space is to take time viewing the architecture and move through the different rooms at a comfortable pace.
In 2019, the building underwent a major renovation that integrated the North Hertfordshire Museum directly into the structure. The modernization involved adding a new glass and steel extension that creates an interesting visual contrast with the original red brick listed structure.
