Platforms Piece, Bronze statues at Brixton railway station, United Kingdom
Four life-size bronze sculptures stand on the platforms of Brixton station, depicting local residents Peter Lloyd, Joy Battick, and Karin Heistermann.
The Public Art Development Trust commissioned artist Kevin Atherton to create these sculptures in 1985 as part of a £1 million station improvement project.
These sculptures represent the first public art installations of black British individuals at a railway station, marking a shift in representation within British public spaces.
The sculptures are positioned across different platforms, allowing passengers to view them while waiting for their trains at this south London transport hub.
In 2023, a fourth sculpture named Joy II joined the original three figures, featuring Joy Battick modeled again after 37 years.
