Byron's Pool, Local nature reserve in Grantchester, United Kingdom
Byron's Pool is a nature reserve covering about 4.4 hectares with woodland, several ponds, and a stretch of the River Cam. The mix of water and trees creates habitats that support diverse plant life across the area.
The land was part of Trumpington Hall Estate until 1949, when it changed ownership and was later established as a protected nature reserve in 2005. This shift from private grounds to public green space shaped what it is today.
The place takes its name from Lord Byron, who swam regularly in the weir pool during his time at Trinity College. This connection to the poet shapes how locals and visitors experience the space today.
Access is via Grantchester Road where free parking is available, though vehicles taller than 1.9 meters cannot fit. Bring suitable footwear since some paths can become muddy or wet depending on recent rainfall.
The reserve contains six managed ponds that serve as breeding and spawning grounds for frogs and newts. These ponds are central to the reserve's role in supporting amphibian populations throughout the year.
