Доходный дом И.С. Кальмеера, Architectural landmark in Arbat District, Russia
The building is a residential structure showcasing neoclassical revival style with semicolumns, faceted bay windows, and an arched central balcony across its symmetrical front. The original apartments were spacious and are currently being updated with modern electrical, plumbing, and heating installations.
The structure was built in 1913 following architect Valentin Dubovsky's designs and initially housed Moscow's upper-middle class residents during the early 20th century. It has survived decades of urban change and remains a significant example of pre-revolutionary architectural culture in the city.
The mansard floor holds the studio of artist Boris Messerer, who has worked in this space for many years as part of the building's creative heritage. It shows how artists have made homes for themselves within Moscow's older architecture.
The building is located in the Arbat District and is easily accessible on foot through the neighborhood's historic street layout. Visitors should be aware that renovation work is ongoing, which may limit access to certain areas of the structure.
The interior walls and ceilings display preserved paintings created from sketches by artist Ignaty Nivinsky. These decorative works capture the artistic craftsmanship of Moscow's pre-revolutionary period.
