Hargraves Community Center, Community center in Chapel Hill, United States

Hargraves Community Center is a recreation facility in Chapel Hill with meeting rooms, event spaces, tennis courts, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, and a swimming pool. The building offers everything families and groups need for different activities ranging from sports to private functions.

The facility opened in 1945 through federal funding and contributions from over 400 residents who supported the creation of a community space. The founding reflected the neighborhood's desire to have a place for sports and gatherings.

This hub brings people together for youth sports, classes in arts and fitness, and community gatherings that mark important moments through the year.

The center is located on North Roberson Street and stays open for various activities throughout the year. Visitors should check ahead about which areas are available since the facility regularly hosts private events and classes.

Lucille Caldwell took over leadership in 1951 and became North Carolina's first Black professional in recreation administration. Her hiring marked an important step for Black representation in management roles in the region.
