Ancien centre de tri postal Charleroi X, Postal sorting center near Charleroi-South railway station, Belgium
Ancien centre de tri postal Charleroi X is a postal sorting center near Charleroi-South railway station, featuring a large single-span sorting hall. The structure has a one-hectare ground-floor processing area supported by only four columns and displays stone-clad facades.
The foundation stone was laid in 1988 by Prime Minister Wilfried Martens, marking the establishment of modern postal infrastructure in Charleroi. Operations continued until 2005, when the facility's functions were relocated to a new sorting center in Fleurus.
The building now serves as A6K-E6K, a major Belgian training hub for digital skills and technological innovation supported by European funding. This new purpose demonstrates how industrial and infrastructure spaces in the city transform into centers of learning and contemporary education.
The building features a covered external walkway on the north facade that offers shelter and views over the Sambre river. Its location near Charleroi-South railway station makes it easily accessible, and the covered passage proves practical for visiting in various weather conditions.
The building was engineered with minimal supporting columns to create one large open sorting area optimized for processing high postal volumes. This technical approach reveals the innovative construction methods applied to specialized industrial buildings during the late 1980s.
