Klosterkirche Sankt Marien, Gothic monastery church in Riesa, Germany
Klosterkirche Sankt Marien is a Gothic monastery church in Riesa featuring a long rectangular nave, a narrow choir, and a western tower crowned with a baroque dome. The interior spaces are defined by pointed arches typical of Gothic architecture, creating a vertical emphasis throughout the structure.
The structure was originally built between 1111 and 1119 as a Benedictine monastery but was devastated by fire. Reconstruction took place between 1244 and 1261, shaping the church's current form.
The carved altarpiece from 1609 depicts the Last Supper with painted and partially gilded details reflecting Lutheran theology. The craftsmanship of the wood carving shows the artistic traditions that flourished in the region during this period.
Regular Sunday services are held throughout the year, and the church hosts weddings and baptisms on scheduled dates. Musical performances including choir, instrumental, and organ concerts are arranged periodically for visitors interested in the acoustics and sound.
Three crypts beneath the floor contain naturally mummified remains of former monastery abbots preserved through natural processes. The mummification occurred without any artificial treatment, making it a remarkable example of natural preservation.
