Fort de Manonviller

Fort de Manonviller is a military fortification with an irregular pentagon shape, surrounded by deep trenches and thick stone walls containing gun positions. The structure spans a large site with underground galleries and multiple levels.

The fort was built between 1874 and 1881 as part of France's defensive strategy to protect the eastern border. In August 1914, German forces captured it after intense bombardment.

The fort displays French military engineering from the late 1800s through its casements and gun positions built into the structure. Walking through it, you experience how soldiers organized their defensive spaces during this era.

To visit the fort, you need to arrange a tour in advance through the HCF Haxo association that maintains the site. The location is in a rural area, so allow extra time for travel to reach it.

During the 1960s, the fort's underground chambers were converted into mushroom cultivation spaces. This unexpected use shows how the site found a new purpose in peacetime.
