Site mégalithique de Saint-Just, Megalithic complex in Saint-Just, France.
The megalithic site of Saint-Just is a large complex with many stone structures spread over roughly one and a half kilometers along a rocky ridge. The structures lie within the Landes de Cojoux natural area and include different types of stone arrangements that served various purposes.
The structures were built during the Neolithic period about 4500 years ago and show how the people who created them viewed the site's importance. Several of these monuments were given names over time that have lasted to the present day.
The site holds names rooted in ancient languages that reflect how people connected with this land. Today, visitors can see in the various structures how earlier peoples used and shaped their surroundings.
The site has a marked trail of about 6 kilometers that connects the different stone structures and includes several viewpoints. The walk takes you through natural surroundings and allows you to see the monuments within their wider landscape setting.
A special group of stone blocks called Roches Piquees reaches up to 3 meters high and is made of quartz and a rare stone type called Gourin puddingstone. These blocks only became visible again after major forest fires in the 1970s and 1980s, after being hidden by vegetation for a long time.
