Château de Sallanches, Medieval fortress ruins in Cordon, France

Château de Sallanches is a ruined medieval fortress in Cordon with surviving walls and an isolated watchtower. The remains sit at about 670 meters elevation and display the typical layout of a hilltop castle with a central stronghold and outer defenses.

The fortress developed as the administrative center of a territorial authority between the 13th and 15th centuries under House of Faucigny control. It held strategic importance in regional governance and was eventually abandoned, leading to the decay of its structures over time.

The castle site represents the medieval power structure of Haute-Savoie, where noble families maintained authority through strategic fortifications.

The castle remains are spread across several private properties, restricting visitor access to certain sections. Approach with caution and respect property boundaries, as not all areas are open to the public.

Archaeological investigations by Louis Blondel documented the central keep and outer bailey, confirming the original defensive arrangement. These studies provided important insights into how medieval mountain fortifications were designed and organized.
