Roots, Grade II listed restaurant in Marygate, York, England

The two-story brick building features timber framing, a tiled roof with gabled bays, and a half-octagonal tower on its right side.

Originally constructed between 1893 and 1894 as The Bay Horse public house, the establishment replaced an earlier pub of identical name across the road.

Under the direction of Chef Tommy Banks, Roots earned distinction as the first restaurant in York to receive a Michelin star in 2021.

The restaurant maintains two original timber fireplaces from 1898, including one with a carved panel depicting a bay horse above the hearth.

The establishment transformed from a traditional public house to a Michelin-starred dining venue focusing on local produce and self-sufficient practices.
