Primley House

Primley House is a Grade II listed residential building in Paignton with roots in the 18th century, situated on well-maintained grounds. The structure displays period features such as traditional windows and brick masonry typical of its era.

The estate belonged to the Belfield family until the early 20th century, when Isabella Greenall purchased it in 1904 following her relocation from Liverpool to Devon. This change of ownership marked a shift in how the property would be used.

The connection to wildlife shaped this place: Herbert Whitley converted outbuildings on the grounds into animal habitats, which eventually led to the creation of a nearby zoo. This link to nature and animal care remains part of the local story.

The building now operates as a residential care facility serving elderly residents in the Torbay area. Visitors should note this is a private residential space where access may be restricted.

The greenhouses once housed one of the world's largest collections of exotic birds, including rare blue pigeons and sulphur-crested cockatoos. This remarkable collection reveals how deeply previous owners were engaged in bird breeding and animal care.
