St Jude's Roman Catholic Church
St Jude's Roman Catholic Church, Catholic church in Poolstock Lane, Wigan, England.
St Jude's is a church building with a fan-shaped modern design made of reinforced concrete and brick, forming an isosceles triangle with squared-off corners. The structure was specially engineered to sit on ground affected by coal mining subsidence.
The church opened in July 1965 after construction costs exceeded 100,000 pounds, with additional reinforced foundations required due to coal mining subsidence. This investment reflected the commitment to building a stable place of worship on unstable ground.
The interior displays a crucifixion mosaic by Hans Unger and Eberhard Schulze, alongside Stations of the Cross mosaics that shape the spiritual experience. These artworks give the worship space its distinctive artistic character.
The church welcomes visitors and holds two Sunday masses, with confession services available before Saturday evening mass and on Wednesdays. The level ground and modern construction make accessing the interior straightforward.
The dalle de verre stained glass on the nave walls was designed by Robin Riley and manufactured in France, representing a distinctive element of modern church design. This hand-crafted glass work gives the space a special quality of light.
