Pope's Urn

The eight-foot-tall corten steel urn stands on a pedestal at the riverside, featuring inscribed wooden benches arranged in a circular pattern.

The sculpture was commissioned in 2015 to commemorate Alexander Pope, who lived in Twickenham for twenty-five years and created influential gardens there.

The benches surrounding the urn display enduring quotes from Pope's works, including 'To err is human, to forgive divine' and 'Hope springs eternal'.

Visitors can access the sculpture freely at Champion's Wharf, where they can read Pope's inscriptions while observing the Thames River views.

The design replicates a lost historical urn that Pope created for his friend's garden at Hagley Hall in Worcestershire during the 18th century.
