Torquay Cemetery

The cemetery opened in 1852 when Torquay was expanding rapidly and older burial grounds had become overcrowded. This creation marked a shift toward modern cemeteries with planned design and organized burial practices.

The cemetery is open daily via the main entrance on Barton Road, with parking available near the chapel. Wear sturdy shoes as paths cross uneven ground that can become slippery after rain.

The cemetery holds the grave of Isaac Merrit Singer, inventor of the sewing machine, and his family in a distinct tomb on the grounds. This monument quietly marks the resting place of a figure whose invention shaped daily life across continents.
