Magheramorne estate, estate in Ireland owned by Charles McGarel
Magheramorne Estate is a Victorian manor house near Larne in Northern Ireland, positioned on elevated ground with views across Larne Lough to the northeast. The house features late 19th-century architecture with stone walls and tall windows, while the grounds span over 40 acres and include formal gardens, two woodland gorges with streams and waterfalls, around 150 tree species, walking paths, and stone bridges.
The house was built in 1881 by Sir James McGarel-Hogg, later elevated to 1st Lord Magheramorne, replacing the earlier Ballylig House from 1817. The estate subsequently housed various families including Colonel James McCalmont and Major Harold Robinson, who undertook significant improvements in the 1930s by planting numerous tree species throughout the grounds.
Today the estate serves as a venue for special occasions such as weddings and celebrations, making it a place where visitors create personal memories. The role of the house and grounds has shifted from a family residence to a setting that welcomes guests from across the region.
The estate is primarily accessible for private events like weddings, so it is best to check ahead regarding visiting opportunities. The large open spaces and walking paths allow for leisurely exploration of the grounds on foot, with comfortable shoes recommended due to the uneven terrain in the gardens and woodland gorges.
The estate holds around 150 different tree species, many planted in the 1930s by former owner Major Harold Robinson, who was notable for his work with a prominent department store. This thoughtful tree planting makes the grounds a place where botanical diversity is evident and shifts notably with each season.
