Underwood Quarry

Underwood Quarry is a former limestone extraction site in St Cuthbert Out with large excavated faces used for construction materials. The facility was later converted for different industrial purposes and operates under specialized management today.

The site came under Somerset County Council ownership in the 1930s and was fitted with modern transport systems including aerial ropeways. This infrastructure allowed bulk movement of stone to regional rail connections.

The quarry was once a major employer that shaped local community life in Somerset. Workers used innovative transport systems to move the extracted stone, which became central to regional industry.

The site is not open to the public and is operated by a specialized facility manager. Visitors should inquire in advance as access is restricted and only possible under specific conditions.

After extraction ended, the former quarry became a radar measurement facility, an unexpected repurposing of an old industrial site. This transformation shows how abandoned extraction sites can find new roles in technical research.
