Pant-y-Ffynnon Quarry

Pant-y-Ffynnon Quarry, Limestone quarry near Llantrithyd, Wales.

Pant-y-Ffynnon Quarry is a limestone excavation near Llantrithyd that displays multiple layers of Carboniferous stone formations with visible geological features. The excavated walls and platforms reveal the different rock layers that formed long ago.

In the 1950s, paleontologists conducted significant fossil collecting at the site, leading to important scientific discoveries about ancient life. These findings demonstrated the paleontological importance of the deposits preserved here.

The site reflects the industrial past of South Wales, where stone extraction provided work for many generations and supplied materials for building across the region. Visitors can still see the marks of this labor in the rock walls.

Access to the quarry requires sturdy footwear and caution due to uneven ground and exposed rock faces. Check conditions in advance, as access may be limited and proper safety equipment is important.

The quarry contains rare fissure deposits from the Triassic period with well-preserved fossils of small vertebrates, including a species only recently described by scientists. These finds offer insights into an era that is otherwise poorly documented.
