Inverleith Sports Ground, Rugby union venue in Inverleith, Edinburgh, Scotland.
Inverleith Sports Ground is a rugby union venue in north Edinburgh, set along Ferry Road with a main pitch and surrounding spectator areas. The ground is used for competitive fixtures as well as regular club training sessions throughout the season.
The Scottish Rugby Union bought the land in 1897 and turned it into their first purpose-built ground for international fixtures. They used it for national matches until 1925, when operations moved to the newly opened Murrayfield Stadium.
The ground is home to Stewart's Melville RFC, a club with strong ties to the local community in north Edinburgh. On match days, a loyal crowd gathers along the touchlines, giving the place the feel of a local sport that people genuinely care about.
The ground sits along Ferry Road and can be reached on foot or by bus from central Edinburgh without much difficulty. Scottish weather can change quickly at any time of year, so layered and waterproof clothing is always a safe choice.
In 1905, the ground hosted the first match ever played between Scotland and New Zealand, during the All Blacks' first major tour of the British Isles. That tour helped establish New Zealand as a force in international rugby and drew wide attention to the sport across Britain.
