Balbirnie Stone Circle

Balbirnie Stone Circle is a Neolithic stone formation in Glenrothes comprising ten upright stones arranged in an elliptical pattern. The arrangement encircles a rectangular central setting, and several stones display carved cup and ring marks from prehistoric times.

The stone circle was established in the late Neolithic period and remained in use for several millennia, with excavations revealing cremation burials and ritual activities. Its repeated use extending into the Bronze Age demonstrates its enduring importance as a burial site and ritual center.

The stone formation contains carved cup and ring marks on several stones, demonstrating the advanced artistic capabilities of prehistoric Scottish communities.

The site is easily reached by a minor road east of the B969 junction on the A92 and has designated parking spaces nearby. The open access allows visits at any time and in any weather conditions.

The entire stone circle was carefully dismantled and reconstructed at a new location in 1970 to save it from road construction. This elaborate relocation preserved its original arrangement and allows visitors to experience it today in its relocated setting.
