Stainforth Force, Waterfall in Yorkshire Dales, England.
Stainforth Force is a waterfall in the Yorkshire Dales where the River Ribble flows over a series of limestone cascades. The water drops about 2.5 meters in multiple steps before collecting in a deep pool, with exposed limestone shaping the geological structure.
The waterfall was modified by the Yorkshire Dales National Park to support salmon migration. The changes were made while preserving the natural appearance of the falls.
The waterfall has a connection to composer Edward Elgar, who photographed himself on the nearby bridge during visits to his friend Dr. Buck in Settle. This personal link to a famous musician adds an artistic dimension to the natural setting.
The waterfall is located about 50 yards south of Stainforth Bridge and is easily reached via walking trails. Visitors find several viewing points along the paths, which are particularly interesting during autumn months when salmon migrate.
The dark pool at the base of the waterfall attracts wild swimmers who use the cool water. The limestone formation was shaped by a small anticline, a geological structure that explains the unusual way the water drops.
