Bedminster Bridge, Road bridge in Bristol, England.
Bedminster Bridge comprises two parallel structures spanning the New Cut of the River Avon, with the western bridge featuring Victorian design elements and a cross-lattice iron construction system. Both structures work together to carry the A38 road across three traffic lanes in each direction while accommodating cyclists.
The original bridge from 1809 was replaced in 1883 with a new structure employing Victorian engineering techniques and materials. A second parallel bridge was added in the 1960s to handle increasing traffic demands on the A38 corridor.
The old bridge displays craftsmanship through decorative iron elements and stone details, with woven rope patterns and floral ornaments adorning its structure. These embellishments show how Victorian engineers valued both function and aesthetic design in everyday infrastructure.
The double bridge structure accommodates separate traffic flows, so use the appropriate passage for cars or cycles to avoid congestion. Both levels of the structure are accessible and passage between the two bridges is possible for pedestrians and cyclists.
During the 1883 construction work, a temporary bridge was later moved upstream by river barges at high tide. This displaced structure eventually became the present-day Langton Street Bridge.
