Lonely Tree of Llanfyllin, Ancient Scots pine in Llanfyllin, Wales

The Scots pine tree stands horizontally on Green Hall Hill, measuring 2.65 meters in girth and overlooking the town from its elevated position.

Before its fall in 2014 during intense storms with 100 mph winds, the solitary pine had grown on the hilltop since before 1815.

Local residents traditionally carved initials into the bark, made marriage proposals near the tree, and selected it as a location for scattering family ashes.

The tree received 1,548 votes to win Wales Tree of the Year in 2014 and placed tenth in the European Tree of the Year competition.

After the tree fell, the community transported 30 tonnes of soil up the hill to preserve its roots, enabling potential growth in its horizontal position.
