Lonely Tree of Llanfyllin, Ancient Scots pine in Llanfyllin, Wales
The Lonely Tree of Llanfyllin is an ancient Scots pine that grew horizontally on Green Hall Hill overlooking the town. With a girth of about 2.65 meters, it stood out as a distinctive landmark in the landscape.
The tree had grown on the hilltop since before 1815 until it fell in 2014 during severe storms with winds of 100 mph. The collapse ended centuries of its presence as a landscape feature.
Local people carved initials into the bark and gathered here for marriage proposals and family remembrance. The tree held meaning as a meeting point and symbol of continuity for the community.
The tree sits on an accessible hilltop where you can view it from various angles. Clear weather offers the best conditions for seeing the landscape below and understanding its former prominence.
After it fell, the community hauled about 30 tonnes of soil up the hill to protect its roots. This effort reflects the attempt to help the tree survive even in its horizontal position.
