Exeter Law Courts, Crown Court in Southernhay Gardens, England
Exeter Law Courts is a courthouse featuring an asymmetrical frontage with white cladding and small casement windows overlooking Southernhay Gardens. The interior contains a three-story atrium that creates a spacious central area within the building.
The courthouse relocated from its original site at Exeter Castle to a new modern facility in 2004. The construction was completed under a private finance arrangement.
The building displays the Royal coat of arms on its facade, symbolizing the link between the judicial system and the British monarchy. This emblem forms part of the visual identity that visitors encounter when approaching the structure.
The building is open to the public Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM onward to observe court proceedings. Visitors should check what cases are scheduled and wear appropriate clothing.
The building stands on the former site of the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, which was selected specifically for its central location. This repurposing demonstrates how public land can be transformed for new institutional uses.
